You Matter to Me Day

A few months ago I wrote a post called “You Matter to Me ,” in which I shared about the passing of two friends and the realization I had as a result. The thought – I should have told them they matter to me – occurred to me, not with a smack on the forehead but like a stab-in-the-heart version of “wow, I could’ve had a V8.” It was too late to tell them, but not ... << MORE >>

Sell Your Used Books Online

It’s been roughly eight months since I did “The Big Purge” – the purging of nearly 1000 items that I no longer needed or wanted from my home – and I am in the process of doing a smaller version of it now. My energy has shifted since then, and the acts of re-feng shui’ing my home and letting go of things that don’t serve a purpose for me anymore are ways to align the energy ... << MORE >>

Do you Squidoo? If yes, hello fellow Squid! If no, then it may be worth your while to join this worldwide community of people who write about the things they love, are knowledgeable about and interested in, and who want to share them with folks like you and me. And right now is a great time to become a Squid.

Summer Reading, the Book-Swapping Way

Ah, Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start of pool and beach season. Regardless of where I go to sun and soak, I must have with me my MP3 player and a few books: one of The New York Times Sunday crossword puzzles, another of Sudoku puzzles, and one to read. I buy the puzzle books, and generally use the library for the fiction titles that make up my leisure reading. Since book-swapping sites have been popping up all ... << MORE >>

Take College Courses at No Cost through Open Courseware

If you are considering taking an online course, whether for your career or pleasure, then you may or may not already know about the OpenCourseWare (OCW) Consortium. Nearly 200 colleges, universities, and institutes of higher learning around the world are institutional members of the consortium, and each of them offers college-level courses to the public for free. As long as you have Internet access, they are yours for the taking.

You don’t ...

Mantras for Prosperity

A few months ago I wrote about mantra meditation, and today I am revisiting the topic, specifically with regard to prosperity. As someone who’s been chanting Sanskrit mantras for three years, I can attest to their effectiveness because I have experienced it in multiple ways, including financially. So, if you are someone who could use an infusion of abundance – financial or otherwise – incorporating mantra as a daily practice will help bring it about for you.

Recycle Your Old Electronics and Get Cash

When I did “The Big Purge” several months ago, the things I didn’t gift, throw out, or donate to a local charity were electronics that are problematic, unusable, and/or still containing personal information. I stored the works-when-it-feels-like-it dual cassette deck (I know, right – cassettes?), TV with a burned-out picture tube, prehistoric computer and cell phones, and other electronic equipment in a closet until I was ready to ... << MORE >>

Cell Phones and Health Concerns

Several friends have asked me why I still have a land line when I can use an unlimited cell phone plan instead and save a bunch of money. Three reasons: One is that I can still use my trusty corded, analog phone to make and receive calls when there’s a power outage and there's no recharging a dead or dying cell phone battery. Since brown-outs are only occasional, another reason is that I can be ... << MORE >>

The Inspiring Women Summit

I just registered for the Inspiring Women Summit, a series of free teleconferences featuring bestselling authors, speakers, radio personalities, coaches, and bloggers/podcasters who provide thought leadership in the areas of business and entrepreneurship, education, empowerment, health, relationships, spirituality, transformation, and more. They include some of my favorites: Joan Borysenko, Sonia Choquette, Christiane Northrup, Deva Premal, Marci Shimoff, Tami Simon, Regena Thomashauer (a.k.a. “Mama Gena”), Nina Utne, and Marianne Williamson. ... << MORE >>

Aligning the Energy of Your Environment with You

Several things happened over the past week or so that were difficult yet transformative for me, so it’s not surprising that I woke up Saturday morning with the urge to shift things around. As soon as I opened my eyes, I sensed that my home and I weren’t in energetic sync anymore. I was no longer the person I had been, but my environment was still vibrating at an energy level that was consistent with my former self. ... << MORE >>

You Matter to Me

Last Saturday I lost two people who were dear to me – Bill Pope and his son, Bryce. Bill was a friend, colleague, and "family," and I am blessed to have known him and his beautiful family. The accident was a tragedy in so many ways for so many people, and I think that, under circumstances such as this one, we invariably ask questions such as, “Why them? Why now?” The only answer I’ve had, if it can ... << MORE >>

Avoid Speed Traps with Trapster

Have you ever been driving along at a nice clip, only to find blue lights flashing and sirens blaring behind you? I have. It wasn’t a pleasant experience. (I was pulled over for doing 70 on a 55mph highway. Thankfully, I didn’t get a ticket, just a verbal warning.) Just as the location of this incident is well-known for its police enforcement (yes, I should have known better), there are plenty of others like it in and around the ... << MORE >>

Honey Beauty Mask, Courtesy of Dr. Oz

As I noted in my March 12 post, I had a chance to watch the Dr. Oz Show when I was sick last week. In a segment on honey (he calls it “liquid gold”), Dr. Oz stated that it is his “#1 kitchen healer” due to its ability to heal ulcers and provide healing benefits to the skin. He then made a honey beauty mask and had one of the show’s guests slather it on his face ... << MORE >>

Get Great Deals with the Power of Collective Purchasing

I love a great deal, so it seemed like the Universe was telling me where I could find more of them the other day. Within the span of ten minutes, I read an email from a friend about an online deal available at Groupon and then an article about LivingSocial, another website that does pretty much the same thing: connect visitors to local businesses that offer highly-discounted, ... << MORE >>

Homemade Low-Calorie Soft Drinks

I've been under the weather for most of this week, so in addition to sleeping a lot, I've had a lot of juice and watched a few daytime TV shows that I don’t ordinarily have a chance to watch, like The Doctor Oz Show. In a segment yesterday about teenagers having role models for weight loss, a young lady who'd lost approximately 40 or 60 pounds (I forget which) said she substituted foods, like drinking club soda ... << MORE >>

Secure Your Software

Soon after I booted up my laptop this morning, a notifier popped up to inform me that a piece of installed software was insecure. Upon opening the notice I learned that the lack of security was in Mozilla Thunderbird, the email program I use in place of Outlook. It was listed as a Level 4 “highly critical” threat (out of 5), so I checked the version I had against the latest one on the Thunderbird website, saw that mine ... << MORE >>

Create an Effective Resume

A private school in a suburb of Atlanta shut its doors at the end of January. Registrations had decreased, as had most of the necessary funding to keep this nonprofit operating – both products of the economic downturn. All staff members were let go, and so began the task of updating their resumes. One of my clients, a member of the school's Board of Trustees, knows that I've been writing resumes professionally for more years than I care to ... << MORE >>

Turbo Snake – It Really Works

How frustrating! The drain in my tub got clogged again and I was ankle deep in water during a shower again. I’d bought a plumbing snake at Lowe’s a few months ago and used it a few times, and it worked (kinda, sorta). Problem is, I can’t remove the top of the built-in stopper in the tub so I can’t get the snake where it needs to go to get all of the hair out.

I’ve seen the Turbo Snake ...

Web Security Tools

I’ve been using the Internet for fifteen years, and during this time I came to loathe not knowing if a link would take me to a site that is legit or a scam. When I discovered WOT and McAfee SiteAdvisor a couple of years ago, I installed them on my laptops and searching, surfing, and clicking have been safer ever since.

WOT stands for Web of Trust, and this ...

The Dalai Lama and Barack Obama

Politics isn’t my thing, but when it concerns His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, I’m in. I am a fervent supporter of his person and his causes, and I am always heartened when a world leader meets with him. I get that it takes something to be on the receiving end of threats of reprisals from the Chinese government and not cave in, especially since China’s economic and political clout has grown.

Simplifying Your Life

I was catching up on some blog reading when I happened upon “43 Simple Ways to Simplify Your Life” on Zen Family Habits. For me, some of the ways are pretty cut and dried and easily doable (#8 “Keep your paper shredder on top of your recycling bin”); some require me to establish new habits (#28 “Create morning, daytime, and evening routines”); some cause me to wonder if the simplicity is entirely practical given my work (#2 ... << MORE >>

Mantra Meditation

After not chanting any mantras for a week, last night I began chanting two mantras – the "Aham Prema" and "Ganesha" mantras – for a 40-day period. Before I inadvertently stopped my last practice, I had recited Aham Prema (Sanskrit for "I am Divine Love") 141,264 times and achieved the first level of Mantra Siddhi.

Thomas Ashley-Farrand, a renowned authority on Sanskrit mantras, writes on his website, "Those who have unwrapped the power of a mantra through many repetitions achieve something ...

2010 – Year of the Tiger

Happy New Year! Today marks the start of the year 4707 – the Year of the Tiger – on the Chinese lunar calendar.

If you were born in 1950, 1962, 1974 or 1986, then Tiger is your zodiac sign in Chinese Astrology. However, if you were born between January 1 and early-mid February, then your sign is most likely Ox or Cow (more on this below). This is due to the Lunar New Year beginning on the date of the second new moon after the Winter ...

Nicknames, Catch Phrases, and Linguistic Whatnots

Earlier today I chatted with a friend who shared that she’d just eaten about a third of the batch of gluten-free cornbread she’d made. She has quite a penchant for it but, unlike me, she exercises moderation in consumption. (Seriously, this stuff is gluten-free AND delicious and 1/3 isn’t much… really.) As we bid our good-byes, I said, “Talk to you later, Corn Bread Girl.” She was still laughing as we hung up so she apparently got as much ... << MORE >>
